My Life as a Buddha Baby
Written by Joseph Dujmovic

Day after day, so many people pass me by without even saying hello or acknowledging my presence. I too, am a part of this place, or as you all call it, “Adelphi.” All I want is for someone to come sit and have lunch with me, throw around a Frisbee with me-  my friends and I watch the Ultimate Frisbee team practice during the day. At night, when all is quiet, we try to improve our Frisbee skills. We have a couple of really good players and everyone is hoping that one day, we’ll be able to attend a tournament just like the team does.

Being a Buddha Baby is not easy; I constantly get laughed at. Some of my friends have even been kidnapped, but we’re not worried because we Buddha Babies have a keen sense of direction. You may find this surprising, but often I scare people away, which I find really amusing. Take this one guy, for example, who never looks me in the eye and always picks up his pace whenever he passes us. Or, there’s this one girl, who is very pretty I might add, who walks by with her hand in front of her face and always looks in the opposite direction. I’m not going to bite! I love to see people walk by and I can’t wait for the chance to pick up my hand and say, “Hello!” Nobody ever gives me the chance to greet them. I’m just as normal as any other Buddha Baby that I’ve ever met. Am I different than everyone else? I listen to rock music, I can tell you the latest scoop on Paris and Britney, and I love Chinese take-out. I’m just like every other college kid...

It’s getting cooler out and the nights are becoming chillier. I just got over a cold and I’d like to keep it that way. My posse and I have started a petition that would give us some clothes to wear. All of my friends really like those sweatshirts everyone wears with “Adelphi” written across the chest; we just wish that they made our size. Don’t they realize that there are some small folks living on campus? Some of us can’t afford to get sick because our Buddha Baby insurance policy is not accepted at the local hospitals. What are we going to do when one of us get pneumonia? The only piece of clothing we ever received was from a kind nursing student who gave us all of these cute little hats. They kept our heads toasty warm and none of us got sick that winter. Hopefully, our plea will be heard and we will be able to look good for prospective students and their parents on campus tours. Come on now, I know you’re probably asking yourself, “What can be cuter than a Buddha Baby dressed up in Panthers gear?”

Remember, Adelphi students, that we are here to keep an eye on the place and lend Public Safety an extra hand. We  know how scary this world can be, we live it, too. Stop and chat with us whenever you like; we really enjoy having guests because it makes the days go by so much faster! Who knows, maybe we’ll even have time for a game of Frisbee. . .
